Monitoring the progress of software development is an important part of the project management of any software development lifecycle. Automatically generated baselines provide reference points to make that task much easier.
A baseline is a reference point in software development – a “line in the sand”. It may be marked by the completion of software configuration item(s), the end of a development phase, or by formal approval. Conversely, it may be timed quite arbitrarily to provide a “snapshot” as a reference point to monitor progress – perhaps weekly or monthly.
Effective baselines give stakeholders insight into how well the project is progressing – that is, its performance compared to plan. This insight provides a catalyst for appropriate adjustments to be made – either by making changes to the plan, or by adjusting resources.
Baselining can also provide valuable data into EVM (Earned Value Management), a project management methodology. EVM considers schedule, costs, and scope to measure project performance.
The LDRA tool suite supports development teams who are working in a formal development process to improve code quality and maintainability, including static and dynamic analysis, coding standards compliance, and unit, integration, and system testing.
TBmanager is a component of the LDRA tool suite. It is a role-based requirements traceability tool that supports team members in their work on allocated activities and links the resulting code and verification artefacts back to higher level objectives. It provides project baselining utilities as an integral part of that functionality, reporting on the effects of changed requirements and/or changed code.
Summary reports generated by TBevolve can be attached to TBmanager as artefacts to integrate the facilities offered by both.
