It was an exciting day in Bangalore when industry leaders Shinto Joseph, Director of SEA and ANZ Operations at LDRA, and Christoph Herzog, Co-CEO of TASKING, gathered to share their insights on the evolution of the embedded industry. This discussion took place during LDRA’s 50th-anniversary celebration and User Conference in Bengaluru. Explore the 50-year legacy of LDRA that continues to inspire conversations like these, reminding us how far the industry has come and where it is headed next.

Kicking off the conversation, Shinto Joseph reflected on the industry’s roots. He recalled starting his career around 35 years ago when encountering a microcontroller and a 286 machine was groundbreaking. Back then, computers were massive, intimidating devices housed in large rooms. The introduction of Windows 3.0, which brought colour to screens, felt revolutionary. At that time, most believed that PCs would dominate the future of computing. Fast forward three decades, and the landscape has changed significantly. Today, less than one per cent of processors manufactured are for PCs. Instead, embedded systems have taken centre stage, quietly transforming daily life. From smart homes and medical devices to automotive applications, embedded technology is now everywhere, providing intelligence and connectivity to consumers.

Interestingly, despite the important role embedded systems play today, this was not always a popular career choice. When Shinto Joseph entered the field, many questioned his decision. Initially, the embedded sector was limited to specialised areas such as aerospace, defence, and nuclear applications. Cars had very little electronics beyond essential functions. However, the automotive and consumer electronics industries dramatically reshaped this narrative, revealing the vast potential embedded systems hold in everyday life.

Christoph Herzog emphasised the crucial role of standards and stable coding guidelines in shaping the embedded world. In industries like aerospace, nuclear, and automotive, longevity and stability in software and hardware systems are vital. Unlike consumer applications, these sectors cannot afford frequent updates or changes; they demand reliability that lasts decades. This need for precision and stability highlights the unique engineering skills necessary for embedded systems. Particularly in India, known as the world’s skill capital, embedded engineering has become an essential profession, needing expertise across electronics, software development, and mechanical engineering. Christoph Herzog noted that Germany’s reputation for product engineering excellence complements India’s service-oriented engineering strength, creating powerful synergies that benefit the global market.

Another interesting topic discussed by Shinto and Christoph was the shift from single-core to multicore processing. Multicore processing initially started as a highly specialised field, leading to dedicated conferences and significant engineering challenges related to inter-core communication and software optimisation. Today, multicore processors are standard, reflecting the rapid evolution and adaptability of embedded systems. Looking ahead, artificial intelligence (AI) promises to bring about another transformative wave. Integrating AI into embedded systems offers remarkable opportunities along with significant challenges. Christoph Herzog stressed that AI is not expected to replace developers; instead, it will help them improve the quality and speed of their work, resulting in smarter and safer systems. However, adopting AI requires caution. Moving into AI without fully considering issues like liability, safety standards, and accountability could have serious consequences. The industry must embrace AI thoughtfully, understanding its potential and limitations.

The conversation also marked a new chapter for LDRA following its recent acquisition by TASKING, positioning LDRA now as a TASKING company and highlighting the promising partnership between LDRA and TASKING. Both Shinto Joseph and Christoph Herzog acknowledged that this collaboration represents a significant step toward addressing key industry challenges, including time-to-market pressures, software complexity, and the growing demand for functionality. By integrating developers and testers through cohesive tools, the partnership aims to simplify software development processes, easing traditional tensions between testers and developers. Ultimately, this synergy seeks to enable faster, safer, and more efficient product development, benefiting the entire embedded ecosystem.

In essence, the embedded industry has evolved tremendously, moving from niche applications to mainstream prominence. The future holds significant promise, with ongoing innovations in software methodologies, AI integration, and collaborative tools. As the industry advances, LDRA remains committed to supporting this evolving landscape, ensuring that safety and security standards keep pace with rapid technological developments.
