Only a few days to go! Although it’s only been what seems like a few months since the last one, we’re looking forward to sharing big news at Embedded World 2023.  We will be occupying stand 505 in hall 4 and we look forward to seeing you there, in one of our conference talks, or both! Some of our big news at Embedded World this year concerns Support for Multicore Processors in hard real-time control applications. Interference related issues have long been a challenge, both in civil aviation (with its CAST-32A & A(M)C 20-193 guidelines) and in safety critical sectors generally. A new take on the LDRA tool suite’s ideal combination of static analysis, dynamic analysis, and requirements traceability to deal with the thorny problem of WCET and interference research will be central to this year’s messaging.

LDRA presentations: 14 March  2023

12.00 to 12.30 Should tool verification be the default approach to tool qualification?

Presented by Mark Richardson

For many safety-critical applications, tool qualification is a necessary part of ensuring that a tool chain can produce code of sufficient quality to fulfil the needs of the applicable standards. For all but the most critical applications, the use of TÜV certified tools is sufficient. But when the stakes are high, functional safety standards demand more.

Clearly the learned authors of the standards perceive verification to be the best assurance that a software tool is reliable. Assuming that to be true, are there more grounds to justify a tool verification process than application criticality alone?

This paper will discuss what “best practice” looks like for all levels of safety criticality, and why verification may be justified for many more applications.

13.45 to 14.15 How long is a piece of string? Complexity and how to measure it.

Presented by Andrew Banks

Many of the lifecycle standards, especially those in the functional safety domain, include requirements to “enforce low complexity” without giving context or methodology.

Typically, this is addressed by solely focusing on cyclomatic complexity – but is that the correct approach when other categories of complexity are equally applicable?

This paper will discuss why the avoidance of complexity features so highly in the standards, how it is enumerated, and how it can be minimized. It will also review and compare the merits of McCabe’s cyclomatic complexity and other complexity metrics.

14.45 to 15.15 FACE: The MOSA lessons we can all learn

Presented by Mark Pitchford

Developing embedded application software is an expensive business – even more so for critical applications. The US Department of Defense’s Modular Open Systems Approach (MOSA) helps to address that by ensuring that interoperable modular components built by different companies across different eras can perform together.

This paper will look critically at the implementation of the Future Airborne Capability Environment (FACE™) MOSA implementation, and its track record to date. It will highlight elements of the standard that have been successful, drawing out lessons learned from its implementation that are likely to be equally applicable across all sectors.

11:00 to 11:30 WCET and critical applications: No place for approximations?

For a single core, the calculation of Worst-Case Execution Times (WCET) using static analysis alone can only be an estimate. That problem is exacerbated when more cores are involved, where shared resources such as memory and caches further degrade the theoretical calculation. In an environment where precise timing can mean life or death, approximations do not sit comfortably.

The most demanding execution paths in the code base can be identified precisely using static analysis. This paper will argue that leveraging that information in conjunction with the dynamic measurement of WCET presents the most pragmatic approach to achieving the assurances demanded across the safety-critical sectors, including the CAST-32A & A(M)C 20-193 objectives in civil aviation.

14:45 – 15:15 Auto-Generated and Hand-Crafted Critical Application Code: Testing a Hybrid Code Base

Presented by Mark Richardson

UML and other modelling languages can improve quality while shortening time to market. Given today’s ever-increasing demand for embedded software, small wonder that it is gaining popularity. But in an era where the creation of a “green-field” project is rare, the need to test code bases that are part auto-generated, part hand-crafted is ever more prevalent, even in the world of critical software. This paper will argue that the use of an independently developed test suite addresses that challenge, retaining both the integrity required for critical applications, and the advantages of automation.

14:15 – 14:45 Developing safe software for autonomous vehicle systems

Presented by Andrew Banks

New Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) technologies enable ever higher levels of autonomy, and established technologies are being quickly introduced across all makes and models of vehicles.  ADAS systems tend to be regarded as highly critical and hence fall into the higher ISO 26262 Automotive Safety Integrity Levels (ASILs). They consequently require the more rigorous of the development, validation, and verification processes defined by the standard.

This paper will explore critical areas for improving systems and software development processes and tools to cope with this trend, explain why they are important, and show how they can accelerate delivery and standards compliance of ADAS systems and software.

MISRA situation report: 15 March 2023

In addition to LDRA’s papers being presented at the conference the MISRA situation report will be presented by our very own Andrew Banks. Andrew is not only a Technical Specialist with LDRA, he is also the Chairman of the MISRA C Working Group. He was therefore the natural choice to chair the conference MISRA stream on 15th March, and he will present this situation report as part of that stream.
