Aerospace Cybersecurity with Reusable Software Components in DO-326 Framework


Aerospace certification processes are tilted towards a rigorous verification process to ensure the safety-critical functions meet appropriate design assurance levels.

However, in today's time security also has become the prime challenge in modern aerospace system development and certification. The aviation network and even the aircraft are getting connected to the internet(nose-to-tail) and other private networks.

The challenges which existed in the cyber world have migrated to the aviation network now. The risks associated with network doubles up in the case of a connected aviation network. The aerospace systems built over the years were not developed considering security in mind and software upgrades for the security requirements on the post facto certification baselines are either costly or not so effective.

The international guidelines DO-326A/ED-202A and associated set are the only Acceptable Means of Compliance (AMC) by FAA and  EASA for aviation cyber-security airworthiness certification, as of now.

Reusable software components such as tools, Operating systems, libraries, IP pose the risk of exploitation due to inherent vulnerabilities of language, design/architecture, and usage.

What are the implications of software component reuse from a cybersecurity perspective? This presentation will reflect on the verifying the fit of the use of such components from the security perspective in the light of the emergence of the DO-326A/ED-202A set of guidelines.

Priyasloka Arya has 19+ years of professional experience in Defence and Aerospace domains.  Currently, he is working in LDRA as Senior Technical Manager - Certification Services. He has served Honeywell and Defence Research Development Organization (DRDO) in various capacities as a leader and as well as an individual contributor.

Arya has Bachelor of Engineering (in Electronics) degree from NIT (National Institute of Technology), Jamshedpur and MBA in International Business from ICFAI, Hyderabad. Arya is PMP, PRINCE2, ITIL, Six Sigma Black Belt, AS9100 (Internal Auditor), CPRE(IREB), ISTQB, FSCP(TuV) and ASEP (INCOSE) certified professional.

Arya has worked closely in Avionics, Missile Telemetry, and Embedded Electronics domains and has experience in requirements engineering, system design, safety assessment, software development, test environment development, test procedure development, and avionics certification processes.

Arya has worked as a certification specialist In Honeywell with a delegation to approve airborne software (complying with DO-178B/C, DO-297, DO-330, DO-332) of various Communication, Navigation and Surveillance projects. Arya has worked in multiple system development projects complying with ARP-4754A as a candidate certification specialist.
